What we do

State of the Land is Lincoln University’s flagship initiative focused on confronting the pressing challenges — and possibilities — facing our land-based sectors. Rooted in our deep commitment to land, food, ecosystems, and people, this project brings together knowledge, partners, and communities to better understand where we are now and where we need to go. In doing so, we aim to cultivate a future in which the land continues to sustain life, livelihoods, and biodiversity for generations to come.

At the heart of the initiative is a clear mission: to provide an authoritative, future-focused voice on the state of the land — here in Aotearoa New Zealand and in partnership with global institutions. Through robust, evidence-based reporting and dynamic public engagement, State of the Land will elevate national and international awareness of environmental, social, and economic trends shaping our rural and ecological landscapes.

The initiative includes a comprehensive programme of activity:

  • State of Land Reports tracking key indicators and trends

  • Annual State of Nation – Land Addresses highlighting the health of the environment and its relationship with agriculture

  • Sector-wide Debates on urgent issues such as climate adaptation and food security

  • Thought leadership forums and events under the Connecting and Community banner

  • Celebration of academic excellence and applied research through our Excellence series

Lincoln University is uniquely positioned to lead this work. As New Zealand’s specialist land-based university, we produce the largest cohort of graduates for the farming and food sectors and contribute high-impact research that spans agriculture, environment, and rural economies. State of the Land is how we live up to our responsibility to lead, convene, and share — working with industry, iwi, researchers, and policy-makers to navigate the path toward a thriving, sustainable future.

Together, we are cultivating the future of our land. Join us.
